The students

Who are the students of the Academy of Dressmakers?
Career • Youth • Domestic

The Career Focused

  • For the individual entering the Fashion Industry form a “construction perspective rather than from a design perspective. This individual has a Passion for seeing their ideas come to life and want to be able to create any garment from scratch. This student may not want to be a ‘Designer‘, but assist other designers, or become a Dressmaker/Machinist or Patternmaker. With these ‘practical’ skills the student will be highly employable being able to enter a variety of companies.
  • We Compliment the skills of Fashion Graduates from other Fashion Design Institutes with additional Garment Construction knowledge.
  • We recognise that Graduates of Fashion Schools need to “refresh’ skills learnt in an ‘academic’ situation to then apply their knowledge to more ‘realistic commercial’ applications.
  • This is achieved by ‘Specialising’ in their area of Interest.

The Youth of Today

  • We encourage the young from yrs 7 – 12 who have an interest in Fashion to learn construction before they can understand the meaning of a ‘Good Design’.
  • Understanding the possibilities in construction can open the mind to endless possibilities and variations when designing and make the imagination a reality.
  • The Academy has designed a range of courses for the High School student to assist with the HSC project, Beginners Classes and Patternmaking Classes.

Currently working with Fashion and Textiles

  • We cater for those who are already in the Industry but would or need to ‘retrain’- and now learn different methods of Construction, to increase employment opportunities, e.g. going from Formal wear to Stretch wear, Piece work to Alterations, Womens wear to Mens wear, etc.
  • We also cater for School Teachers in the field of Textiles or Design and Technology who wish to improve their skills to be able to assist School Students with their projects in construction.

The Domestic Sewer

  • For the individual/ s who would like to Make and Alter Garments for their own interests, for their friends and/or family.
  • For the Domestic sewer who has built up a ‘word of mouth’ client base and would like to commence a home business.
